Man Gives His Pregnant SIL The Boot Upon Finding Out She Abandoned His Cat On The Streets
The poster, a 27-year-old man, is having a bit of a dilemma as to how to handle his fiancée’s pregnant sister, who moved in after getting kicked out of her house by her boyfriend because she’s none too pleased with him) and his cat Billy. The sister turned on Billy, who was a beloved pet, by yelling at him, spraying him with water and throwing away his food. Despite all this, the fiancée dismissed her sister as ignorant for blatantly disregarding the real harm she was causing her cat, as she never grew up with any pets. Billy’s sister however took the matter further and dumped the boy next to an auto repair shop, which caused the poster to demand she leave their home.
The poster’s fiancée defended her sister saying she was pregnant and applied to cats being unsafe around preganant women as a reason for the mistreatment of his pet. A rift occurred as the fiancée called the poster “unsupportive” and was overreacting because she was looking out for Billy when her sister was at risk.

This story highlights several important dynamics, including the responsibility of accommodating guests, the ethics of pet ownership, and potential misunderstandings about pregnancy and animals.
- Pregnancy and Cats: The fiancée’s sister justified her actions by claiming cats are harmful to pregnant women, likely referencing the risk of toxoplasmosis, a parasitic disease sometimes transmitted through cat feces. While toxoplasmosis is a legitimate concern, the risk can be mitigated by avoiding litter box handling and practicing proper hygiene. However, hostility toward the cat or abandoning it was unnecessary and reflects a deeper lack of respect for the household and its boundaries. Studies have shown that owning pets can provide emotional stability, making Billy’s role in the poster’s life significant. (Source: CDC, “Pregnancy and Cats”)
- Respecting Household Dynamics: Guests, even in desperate situations, must respect the existing members of a household, whether human or animal. Billy is described as more than a pet—he is a companion and an emotional support system for the poster. The sister’s deliberate actions to mistreat Billy and then lie about abandoning him demonstrate a disregard for the household’s established rules and emotional dynamics. Trust and communication are critical, and her behavior breached both.
- Financial and Emotional Strain: The poster is the sole provider, taking on extra work to accommodate his fiancée and her sister. The added stress of this financial burden, coupled with witnessing his pet’s mistreatment, understandably escalated the situation. His fiancée’s failure to support him or address her sister’s behavior undermines their partnership and highlights differing priorities.
- Legal and Ethical Considerations: Abandoning a pet is not only unethical but also potentially illegal, depending on local animal cruelty laws. Many jurisdictions consider the abandonment of animals to be a form of neglect, punishable by fines or even imprisonment. The sister’s actions may have placed her in legal jeopardy had the neighbor not intervened to save Billy. (Source: ASPCA, “Laws Regarding Animal Abandonment”)

Not the A-hole (NTA). The original poster was within his right to protect his pet as well as correct the sister for her disgusting actions. It sucks for fiancee’s sister that she was in a tight spot but she broke several lines: jeopardized Billy’s safety and violated the OP’s trust. The fiancé(e) wanting the sister to jump in at the expense of their relationship is not a simple matter, since it indicates there may be unresolved priorities that indicate something requiring resolution before the relationship goes further. Respect between all members of the household — including pets — is not optional.
