According to parenting success coach Sapna Rad, turning sixteen is more than just cake and celebration. It’s a powerful moment in a teenager’s life that marks the shift from being a child to becoming a young adult. It’s a time when teens start to discover who they are and want more freedom and independence.

“This is the beginning of what psychologists call ‘individuation’—a process where teens ask themselves big questions like ‘Who am I?’,” explains Rad. “Celebrating a sweet sixteen isn’t just about throwing a party. It’s about recognizing your teen’s emotional growth and the changing bond between parent and child.”

This stage of life is often confusing and overwhelming for teens. That’s why parent support plays a huge role in helping them feel safe and confident. But sadly, not every parent is ready or able to provide that support.

“Many parents feel afraid or threatened when their teen starts pulling away to find their own path. As a result, they may try to control everything, ignore emotions, or even use fear to manage behavior,” Rad says. “But this can damage parent-teen communication, reduce trust, and make the relationship weaker.”

“Teens don’t need perfect parents”

Some parents struggle with their own fears and anxiety, especially when their kids start becoming more independent. Without even realizing it, this can lead to a toxic parent-teen relationship, where control replaces care.

“Spying, constant criticism, and taking away a teen’s freedom are not signs of love—they are signs of control,” explains parenting coach Sapna Rad. “When teens start hiding their thoughts or feelings just to avoid being judged, that’s a red flag. It’s no longer healthy communication—it’s a power struggle.”

If you’re a teen going through this, Rad says the most important thing is to remember it’s not your fault. Don’t blame yourself—or even your parents. Instead, talk to trusted adults like school counselors, teachers, or relatives who can support you and remind you that you’re not alone.

Rad also recommends helpful tools for emotional healing:

  • Journaling – writing down your thoughts can bring clarity
  • Therapy or mental health support for teens – talking to a professional can be life-changing
  • Learning emotional tools – like how to set healthy boundaries and boost self-worth

“These steps can help teens feel strong and confident inside, even if they can’t change their outside situation right away,” she says.
